The Non-race Category of Pedal Safari will be divided into four legs (see Itinerary) and will commence on August 3, 2008, after two days of orientation. Riders will not be obliged to participate in all four legs. Following is a general description of the Pedal Safari Non-race Category schedule and route. More details and a precise schedule and route-plan may be found under the Itinerary section.
From the East African coastal town of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, by the Indian Ocean, we will snake our way north-westward through rural Tanzania, making nightly stops in townships and villages. Five days cycling will bring us to Moshi and Arusha, cities nestled in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Here we will take a break from bicycling and get involved in goodwill projects such as helping to refurbish classrooms for schools or involve in other community projects. We will then venture into the wilderness to experience the East African wild-life first hand. Our options here include visiting the Ngorongoro crater or climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. Those who intend to take part in the Second Leg will not have time to climb Kilimanjaro at this point. You can skip any one of the legs to climb Kilimanjaro or opt for doing so after the riding is done. We will regroup after our excursions for the second stretch of the adventure: a two-day ride from Arusha, Tanzania to Nairobi, Kenya, via Namanga, a trading center and immigration service post on the Kenya-Tanzania frontier. In Nairobi we take another break to contribute to more goodwill projects, immerse in Kenyan culture and appreciate more wildlife. Given that we have only a day's break in Nairobi, we will not venture out too far and will limit ourselves to the two closest game reserves to Nairobi, the spectacular Tsavo National Game Reserve and Hell's Gate National Park. After the Kenyan honeymoon, we hit the road again, this time headed for the "pearl of Africa," Uganda. A three-day ride will bring us to Malaba, a Kenya-Uganda frontier post, where we will cross over into Uganda. After we cross the Kenyan border into Uganda, we will make its our stop in Budaka, a small trading center near the town of Mbale, where we will break for a couple of days and get a feel for idyllic rural Uganda. In Budaka and Mbale, we will be treated to tribal drumming and dancing. After this refreshing break, we will head for our final destination, Kampala, with a night's stop in Jinja. Please keep in mind that we will almost always begin riding by 6:00am. This entails rising early to pack our stuff and eat breakfast. The pay-off is that we will finish the day earlier and will get to interact with the people in our host towns at the day's end. Those who intend to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro should note that this will entail an additional cost to cover park fees, a guide and a baggage carrier. Prepare at least $600.00 for this. We will post the exact cost as soon as we have it figured out. Good luck! ![]() Home > The Safari > Non-race Category |
