The Race Category of Pedal Safari will be divided into four legs (see Itinerary) and will commence in the summer of 2008, after two days of orientation. Riders will not be obliged to participate in all four legs. Following is a general description of the Pedal Safari Race Category schedule and route. Details and a precise schedule and route-plan can be found under the Itinerary section.

From the East African coastal town of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on the Indian Ocean, we will snake our way north-westward through rural Tanzania, making nightly stops in villages and townships. Three days later, we will arrive at Moshi and Arusha, cities nestled in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. Here we will join the Non-race Category riders, take a break from cycling for a few days, and get involved in goodwill projects such as helping to refurbish classrooms for schools.

We will then venture into the wilderness for a couple of days to experience the East African wild-life first hand. Our options here will include visiting the Ngorongoro crater to witness migrating herds of game, or climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. Those who intend to taking part in the Second Leg of the Safari will not have time to climb Kilimanjaro at this point. Keep in mind you can choose to skip any one of the Legs to climb Kilimanjaro or opt for doing so after the riding is done.

We will regroup after our excursions for the second stretch of the adventure: a two-day ride from Moshi to Nairobi, Kenya, via Namanga, a trading center and immigration service post on the Kenya-Tanzania frontier. In Nairobi we will take another break to contribute to more goodwill projects, immerse in Kenyan culture and appreciate more wildlife. Given that we have only a day's break in Nairobi, however, we will not venture out too far, and will limit our options to the spectacular Tsavo National Game Reserve and Hell's Gate National Park.

After the Kenyan honeymoon, we hit the road again, this time headed for the "pearl of Africa," Uganda. This ride, partly through the Great Rift Valley, offers some spectacular scenes. It will also be a fairly challenging stretch, with major uphill rides. Fortunately we should have accumulated enough endurance to be up to the challenge by then.

Three days later, we will cross into Uganda at the Busia frontier. After a night's break in Tororo, we will head for the town of Soroti. In Soroti we will take a day off to plant a school orchard, be treated to some top-notch tribal music and dance, and simply relax and have fun. Those who enjoy rock climbing can have a go at the Soroti Rock, a prominent and well-known feature of this little town.

From Soroti, we will embark on the Final Leg of the adventure, heading for Kampala and breaking for a night in Budaka and Jinja, where we will witness the spot where the Nile River breaks away from its source, commencing its long journey to the Mediterranean Sea.

On the third day of the Fnal Leg, we will complete our last 54 mile / 87 km stretch, ending in Kampala. Here all the Pedal Safari "graduates" will of course celebrate the completion of an incredible and enriching experience of a lifetime.

Those who still have time on their hands after the ride and want recommendations for things to see or do, rest assured that there will still be plenty to do.

Please keep in mind that we will almost always begin riding by 6:00am. This entails rising early to pack our stuff and eat breakfast. The pay-off is that we will finish the day earlier and get to interact with the folks in our host towns at the day's end.

Those who intend to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro should note that this will entail an additional cost to cover park fees, a guide and a baggage carrier. Please prepare at least $600.00 for this. We will post the exact cost as soon as we have it figured out.

Good luck!
